Attorney General Loretta Lynch said her recent meeting with Bill Clinton at the Phoenix airport “raises questions and concerns.” Speaking at the Aspen Ideas Festival Friday, Lynch was asked about her meeting with the former president whose wife, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, is under investigation by the FBI, a division of the Department of Justice.
“What on earth were you thinking?” asked a laughing Jonathan Capehart of the Washington Post. “What happened?”
“Well, I think that is the question of the day, isn’t it? And I think that’s a perfectly reasonable question. I think that’s the question that is called by what happened in Phoenix, because people have also wondered and raised questions about my role in the ultimate resolution of matters involving the investigation of the State Department emails,” Lynch said. “And to the extent that people have questions about that, about my role in that, certainly my meeting with him raises questions and concerns, and so, believe me, I completely get that question.”
Lynch attempted to answer several questions she says people have raised by saying that the “process” of the Justice’s investigation should be available for the public to see. She also said the investigation is “being handled by career agents and investigators” that remain independent from her office.
“I fully expect to accept their recommendations,” Lynch added.
The attorney general did not answer Capehart’s original questions.
