The Boston Globe released an editorial slamming President Trump as an “unfit” leader during the coronavirus pandemic.
The Monday piece headlined “A president unfit for a pandemic” claimed that many of the deaths from the coronavirus were “preventable” and that the president thus has “blood on his hands.”
“While the spread of the novel coronavirus has been aggressive around the world, much of the profound impact it will have here in the United States was preventable. As the American public braces itself for the worst of this crisis, it’s worth remembering that the reach of the virus here is not attributable to an act of God or a foreign invasion, but a colossal failure of leadership,” the editorial read.
The Boston Globe claims Trump “reinforced racial stigma” for using the phrase “Chinese virus” and failed to communicate with foreign nations on how to battle the virus at its outbreak to contain the disease.
The Trump administration is “marred by corruption and incompetence, whose mixed messages roil the markets and rock their sense of security,” the editorial added. “Instead of compassion and clarity, the president, in his near-daily addresses to the nation, embodies callousness, self-concern, and a lack of compass,” according to the piece.
The editorial concluded that the public should hope for a quick recovery from the virus, but when it comes time to vote in the general presidential election, there should be “reckoning” for those who died.
“For our own sake, every American should be hoping for a miraculous turnaround — and that the too-little, too-late strategy of the White House task force will henceforth at least prevent contagion and economic ruin of the grandest scale. But come November, there must be a reckoning for the lives lost, and for the vast, avoidable suffering about to ensue under the president’s watch,” the Boston Globe wrote.
Trump warned the U.S. on Tuesday to brace for a “very painful two weeks” ahead as a surge of deaths is expected to hit the country.
“I want every American to be prepared for the hard days that lie ahead. We’re going to go through a very tough two weeks,” the president said, adding later that there will soon be “real light at the end of the tunnel.”
There have been about 184,000 cases of the coronavirus and at least 3,700 deaths in the U.S. since the pandemic began, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker.
