Trump on Paul Ryan retirement: A ‘truly good man’ who leaves a ‘legacy of achievement’

President Trump praised House Speaker Paul Ryan on Wednesday after the Wisconsin lawmaker told House Republicans he will not seek re-election, saying Ryan will leave behind an unquestionable “legacy of achievement.”

“Speaker Paul Ryan is a truly good man, and while he will not be seeking re-election, he will leave a legacy of achievement that nobody can question. We are with you Paul!” Trump tweeted Wednesday.

Ryan told his fellow Republicans on Wednesday that he will retire at the end of this term, Brendan Buck, counselor to Ryan, said. The speaker is “ready to devote more time to being a husband and a father,” Buck said.

The speaker played an integral role in shepherding the GOP’s tax reform bill through the House, an effort that handed Trump his first legislative win as president.
