The United Nations is demanding an investigation into Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s involvement in the suspected hacking of Washington Post owner and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s cellphone.
The body called on the United States and other nations to launch an investigation into Salman for allegedly conducting targeted hacking of his enemies, according to the Washington Post. U.N. investigators concluded “with reasonable certainty” that Bezos’s phone was hacked through a phone number connected to Salman based on a forensic investigation of Bezos’s phone commissioned by the billionaire.
The hacking justifies the need for an investigation “of the continuous, multi-year, direct and personal involvement of the Crown Prince in efforts to target perceived opponents,” the U.N. said in a statement.
Bezos’s team of investigators concluded with “high confidence” that Saudi hackers accessed his phone and stole large amounts of private information from it over the course of several hours. The security breach happened during an earlier conversation between Bezos and Salman via text messages. Salman allegedly sent Bezos a corrupted video file that allowed hackers to access the Amazon founder’s phone after he opened it.
Saudi Arabia has denied the hacking.
