Ryan on Trump’s Nomination: ‘Not My Job’ to Tell Delegates What to Do

Did House speaker Paul Ryan tacitly lend his support to Republican National Convention delegates to dump presumptive nominee Donald Trump at the convention? In an interview with NBC’s Chuck Todd that aired on this Sunday’s Meet The Press, the Wisconsin Republican seemed to do just that.

The Washington Examiner reports:

Ryan, who endorsed Trump earlier this month, is the convention’s chairman. But he told NBC’s “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd, “It is not my job to tell delegates to do, what not to do, or to weigh in on things like that. They write the rules. They make their decisions.” Asked for his opinion on the matter, Ryan said, “My opinion is not relevant here.”

Ryan’s comments come at a time when some delegates are trying to organize a change in the convention rules that would unbind delegates on the first ballot—an effort that would hurt Trump’s ability to win the nomination. The woman tapped to chair the RNC’s rules committee, which will set the rules for this year’s convention a week prior to the confab in Cleveland, has spoken about the possibility of such rules changes.

Meanwhile, RNC chairman Reince Priebus has reportedly heard from state GOP chairs in recent days about a possible coup from delegates over Trump’s impending nomination.
