Man robs store for daughter kidney transplant, returns money

A Philadelphia man entered a smoke shop and robbed it, demanding money for his daughter’s kidney transplant. But then he handed the wad of cash back.

Police are searching for the unidentified man who is shown in surveillance footage clad in medical gloves, wearing thick clothing, with only his eyes visible. Employees of the store say the man entered the smoke shop and ended up with at least a couple hundred dollars in his hand. That’s when he began to talk about his daughter’s health issues.

The man then allegedly became friendly and explained that he was going to return the money because it probably wouldn’t help much with funding the transplant.

The owner of the store, who didn’t wish to be identified, spoke with CBS3 and said that he had mixed emotions with the unusual occurrence.

“He had a gun, he took it out of his pocket,” the owner said, explaining that he pointed it at the face of one of the employees, which is a crime. “But at the same time, he was trying to do that for a health issue, and it wasn’t for drugs.”

Authorities said they are still looking for the man because he was still in “violation of the law.”

“I don’t know what he’s referring to, don’t know if he has a daughter who has some sort of medical need, but he still is in violation of the law for committing a robbery even though he didn’t walk away with anything,” Philadelphia Police Capt. Sekou Kinebrew said.
