FDNY firefighter among Americans killed by roadside bomb in Afghanistan

A New York City firefighter was one of three Americans killed Monday when a bomb went off in Afghanistan.

Christopher Slutman, a father of three and a 15-year veteran of the FDNY, was one of the service members killed by an improvised explosive device near Bagram Air Base, the New York Post reported Tuesday.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack that killed two other service members and injured three other U.S. troops.

Slutman’s name has not been released by the Department of Defense, which withholds names from the deceased until 24 hours after notification of next of kin.

Slutman, a Marine, was awarded the Fire Chiefs Association Memorial Medal in 2014 after crawled on the floor through flames to save an unconscious woman in a bedroom of a burning apartment in the South Bronx.

He is one of seven U.S. troops killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2019.
