Surgeon general on coronavirus: ‘This week, it’s going to get bad’

U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams is warning that the coronavirus pandemic is far from over.

Appearing on NBC’s TODAY show on Monday, Adams said people should be ready for a challenging week.

“I want America to understand this week, it’s going to get bad. We really need to come together as a nation,” Adams said. “We really, really need everyone to stay at home.”

“I think there are a lot of people who are doing the right things, but I think that, unfortunately, we are finding out a lot of people think this can’t happen to them,” he added. “We don’t want Dallas or New Orleans or Chicago to turn into the next New York. It means everyone needs to be taking the right steps right now.”

Adams, who is part of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, pointed out that in recent days testing has “definitely significantly increased,” but said the focus on who to test should shift.

“Here is the problem, we aren’t testing the people who are at highest risk right now,” Adams said. “We need to make sure we’re prioritizing testing for our healthcare workers. We need to take care of the people who take care of people — for people in hospitals and for people at highest risk right now.”
