Democrat Jon Tester welcomes Trump to Montana in newspaper ad touting accomplishments

Democratic Sen. Jon Tester made the unusual move of welcoming President Trump to Montana in newspaper ads ahead of the president’s visit to the state.

Tester, who is up for re-election in a state Trump won by 20 points, touted 16 bills he’s sponsored or co-sponsored that Trump signed into law. The ads are running in a dozen newspapers across the state.

Tester’s ad buy is an attempt to undercut Trump’s campaign rally for Tester’s challenger, State Auditor Matt Rosendale, in Great Falls on Thursday.

“Welcome to Montana, and thank you President Trump for supporting Jon’s legislation to help veterans and first responders, hold the VA accountable, and get rid of waste, fraud and abuse in the federal government,” the ad states.

The Montana Democrat is also planning a statewide radio ad listing his bills that Trump’s signed, according to the Associated Press.

Tester is one of 10 Democrats who are up for re-election in states Trump won in 2016.
