‘WOKE is a JOKE’: Kellyanne Conway questions why Democrats have ‘old white guys’ leading polls

Kellyanne Conway jabbed Democrats for having two white men over the age of 70 as their leading candidates in their 2020 presidential primary.

The counselor to the president referenced a recent CNN poll that showed Sen. Bernie Sanders bumping Joe Biden from the top spot in a nationwide survey. Sanders, 78, locked down support from 27% of respondents while Biden, 77, slipped to second place with 24% support. Biden’s support was in the margin of error, which was plus or minus 5.3 percentage points, but Sen. Elizabeth Warren came in a distant third with 14% support.

Conway, 53, questioned why Democrats were unable to have more diverse front-runners on Wednesday, tweeting, “‘WOKE!’ is a JOKE. With most of the candidates of color and female candidates already pushed out of the race, more than half of Democrat primary voters choose one of the old white guys in the latest CNN poll.”

[Opinion: Is the Democratic Party still the party of diversity?]

In 2016, Conway was the first female campaign manager to lead a candidate to a presidential victory. The 2016 Republican primary featured several nonwhite candidates who made it to the Iowa caucuses, including Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, and Marco Rubio.

Conway is not the only one questioning Democrats for the lack of diversity remaining in the candidate pool. Tom Perez, Democratic National Committee chairman, attempted to justify the all-white debate stage last week by calling it a “remarkably inclusive and, frankly, low bar” to qualify for the debates. He also noted that he’s confident Sen. Kamala Harris would have qualified for the January debate had she remained in the race.
