Thunderbirds pilot killed in Nevada crash

An Air Force Thunderbirds pilot was killed Wednesday when his F-16 crashed during a “routine aerial demonstration training flight,” according to the Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.

The plane was flying over the Nevada test and training range Wednesday morning when his plane crashed. The Air Force was unable to confirm the condition of the pilot Wednesday afternoon.

Nellis AFB said the identity of the pilot would be withheld for 24 hours while the family was notified.

The base added that it’s not clear how the accident will affect the 2018 Thunderbirds season.

The incident was the fourth accident for the military over a 24-hour period.

In November, Lt. Col. Jason Heard was fired from his role as director of the Thunderbirds air show over worries about his “risk management style.
