Facebook officials to brief key House, Senate committees on political use of data

Officials from Facebook this week will brief members and staff on six congressional committees on how a data firm used by President Trump’s campaign accessed the private data of millions of its users.

A spokesman for Facebook said the company would brief the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, the House and Senate Judiciary Committees, the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.

The briefings comes on the heels of revelations that data firm Cambridge Analytica, which was used by the Trump campaign in 2016, improperly harvested private data from more than 50 million Facebook users.

The top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., and the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., wrote to the Republican chairmen of their respective committees in December asking for a subpoena of Cambridge Analytica and Giles-Parscale — two data firms that worked for the Trump campaign.

Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley’s office has been working with Facebook to schedule a briefing since Monday.
