President Trump said he is considering banning travel by Americans to countries overseas as the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread around the world.
Trump addressed the possibility during a press conference on Thursday and said that he would discuss taking the step with State Department officials before making a final decision.
“We are speaking with the State Department later,” he said. “I can’t say right now because I haven’t had the meeting yet.”
The State Department is expected to issue a level-four travel advisory, the most serious warning that can be issued before an outright ban is enacted, warning Americans against traveling internationally.
Dozens of countries, including the United States, have implemented travel restrictions and bans over concerns about the coronavirus outbreak. The U.S. and Canada agreed on Monday to close their shared border to all nonessential travel to limit the spread of the disease.
