President Trump said he discussed with fellow G-7 leaders the possibility of canceling or postponing the Summer Olympics.
“We did discuss it. Prime Minister [Shinzo] Abe was on the call, and that’s a big decision for him, and we don’t know what his decision is, but we’ll live with his decision,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday.
“He has told us that he has not made a decision,” Trump said of Abe.
The Olympics are scheduled in Tokyo for July 24 to Aug. 9, but the coronavirus pandemic has cast doubt over whether the games will go on as planned.
Abe recently indicated after a video conference of G-7 industrialized nation leaders that his stance against pushing back the date for the Olympics was changing.
“I want to hold the Olympics and Paralympics perfectly, as proof that the human race will conquer the new coronavirus, and I gained support for that from the G-7 leaders,” he told reporters.
