Rust film to resume production after moving out of New Mexico

The film Rust will resume filming next January after relocating from its original set in New Mexico.

“The production of Rust will not return to New Mexico,” Melina Spadone, an attorney for Rust Movie Productions LLC, reported to Entertainment Tonight Thursday. “The production is considering other locations, including California, but no decisions have been made.”

This comes after the New Mexico Occupational Safety and Health Department issued its maximum fine of $136,793 to the production of Rust following the accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in October 2021. Lead actor Alec Baldwin, the gunman during the incident, eventually settled with the family of Hutchins earlier this month. His settlement will have no effect on the ongoing investigation by the Office of the First Judicial District Attorney for the state of New Mexico, according to District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies.

In the meantime, Baldwin had struggled to find additional work after the shooting. After 10 months, Baldwin was cast in the Broadway show Art in August.

When filming begins in January 2023, it will be joined by new Executive Producer Matthew Hutchins, the late cinematographer’s widower. The rest of the original cast will return.
