The Hill bails from future White House Correspondents’ Association dinners

The Hill on Tuesday became the first media outlet to announce in the wake of Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner that it will not attend future dinners because of how this year’s comedian unfairly attacked the Trump administration and media.

In a letter to WHCA Director Steven Thomma, The Hill’s chairman, James Finkelstein, defended the dignity of the White House after comedian Michelle Wolf attacked multiple officials and the president himself during her remarks over the weekend.

“[T]he dinner must be non-partisan and done without hostility and personal animus toward the party that occupies the White House — regardless of who is in power,” Finkelstein wrote.

Finkelstein said in years past, “comedians headlining those dinners were sharp and made fun of both the media and the Commander-in-Chief in a way that could induce laughs while not being so offensive and vulgar that C-SPAN actually cut off its radio broadcast, as was the case this year for the first time ever.”

“Based on what Americans witnessed on national television at Saturday night’s dinner, a once-fine evening celebrating the strong, free press the WHCA speaks of has turned into an angry display and ad-hominem attacks,” he continued.

He criticized the association for issuing a general apology, but not making amends with White House press secretary Sarah Sanders or White House counselor Kellyanne Conway for jokes about how they hurt American women by defending Trump day in and day out.

“We hope the dinner can get back to talking about the importance of the Fourth Estate without the kind of ugly sideshow that completely overshadowed the event this year,” Finkelstein said. “In the meantime, without major reforms, The Hill no longer wishes to participate in future dinners.”

Wolf’s jokes included crude lines about abortion, but the theme of her entire routine focused on how the media created Trump by its heavy campaign coverage and continues to pounce on anything he says.
