WATCH: Kaylee McGhee White says polls drive Democrats’ yo-yo COVID policy

A Washington Examiner commentary writer pointed out that Democrats are “in a political tough spot” as they attempt to use COVID-19 policies to appeal to voters heading into the midterm elections.

Kaylee McGhee White was asked by Fox News’s Sandra Smith whether pressure is mounting on politicians after Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin took a stand on giving parents a choice regarding face masks. McGhee White noted that it’s not just Republicans who are likely to push back against heavy-handed policy.

“Democrats are in a political tight spot,” McGhee White said. “A lot of the recent polls that we’ve seen show democratic voters are still divided on this issue. Of course, that’s just what the polls say. Obviously, we’re seeing some election results that say the exact opposite, but then you have Democratic politicians trying to balance the wishes of their own party base while also scrambling to keep their seats ahead of the midterms.”

McGhee White pointed to the recent recall of three school board members by over 70% of voters in the predominately left-leaning city of San Francisco.

“All parents, regardless of their political affiliation, want the right to make the decision best for their kids,” McGhee White added. “Democrats that get in the way of that are in for a reckoning come November.”

Smith acknowledged that the country could be in a different place by then regarding COVID-19 policy, but McGhee White was quick to note the political yo-yo that is played.

“Democratic politicians are eager to lift mandates and restrictions when things are going well or going poorly in the polls but just as eager to reinstate them if they think that is what’s politically necessary.”
