The sheriff’s office in Berkeley County, South Carolina, has appealed to the public to help identify a man who may be a veteran and was found severely injured on a set of train tracks.
The man, believed to be between 55 and 70 years old, was found near Goose Creek on Sept. 24 with “graphic injuries” and was unable to identify himself. The sheriff’s office first posted a photograph of the man’s belongings, including a “USMC Recon” lighter and a mask that said “grumpy old veteran,” to Facebook on Oct. 2.
“The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance to help identify an injured man. The man has been labeled ‘Joe Doe’ as he is unable to assist detectives with his identification. He was located in Goose Creek on September 24, 2020,” the office wrote.
“The man is described as a possibly homeless, Caucasian male with a slender build. He is estimated to be between the ages of 55-years-old and 70-years-old,” the office wrote, later adding, “The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is not releasing the photograph of the male as his injuries are graphic.”
According to a report from WLTX, the man was found lying on train tracks when authorities found him.
On Tuesday, the sheriff’s office was able to update its search by including a photograph of the man and a renewed call for help. The man had a jagged gash on his head that was healing after several stitches.
“The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is still desperately attempting to identify an injured man. The man’s injuries have improved which has allowed us to release a photograph of his face,” the office wrote.
The posts from the sheriff’s office have been shared tens of thousands of times on social media as residents seek to help in the search. The sheriff’s office urged anyone with information about the man to call Detective Corporal J. Williams at (843) 719-5048 or the Berkeley County duty office at (843) 719-4412.
