Traces of the coronavirus on chicken wings from Brazil and shrimp packaging from Ecuador were detected in two cities in China, local authorities said on Thursday.
The coronavirus-laden chicken wings were discovered in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, and the infected shrimp packaging was found Xi’An city, officials announced on Thursday, fueling concerns about there being new outbreaks sourced to shipping, according to Reuters.
Health officials in Shenzhen have tested everyone who may have come into contact with the infected chicken wings, although so far all have tested negative for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. It is not clear how many people may have been exposed to the contagion or how the virus ended up on the food product.
Officials in Xi’An city’s Shannxi province are also working on testing people who might have come into contact with the shrimp packaging.
While the virus originated in China late last year, the country has only had about 90,000 cases of the coronavirus and 4,700 related deaths, figures that have been disputed by some experts. Brazil has the second-most cases in the world, with more than 3.1 million infections and at least 104,000 associated deaths.
