Benjamin Netanyahu to unveil new Iran nuclear intelligence

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will reveal “a significant development” pertaining to the Iran nuclear deal in a Monday speech, his office announced.

Netanyahu’s team provided little public information, but the Israeli leader is expected to argue that the regime’s nuclear program represents a threat to the region.

“Senior Israeli official told me: Israeli intelligence uncovered huge amount of new and dramatic information on the Iranian nuclear program,” Barak Ravid, a senior diplomatic correspondent for Israel’s Channel 10 News, tweeted Monday.

“[W]hoever still believes Iran signed the nuclear deal with honest intentions is going to have a very interesting time this evening.”

Netanyahu’s speech comes just two weeks before President Trump must decide if he will re-impose the sanctions that former President Barack Obama waived when the Iran deal was implemented. He discussed Iran with Trump in a Sunday call, in addition to meeting in person with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is traveling in the region.

“If people thought that Iran’s aggression would be moderated as a result of signing the deal, the opposite has happened, and Iran is trying to gobble up one country after the other,” Netanyahu said after meeting Pompeo in Tel Aviv. “Iran must be stopped. Its quest for nuclear bombs must be stopped. Its aggression must be stopped. And we’re committed to stopping it together.”

The State Department is expected to open the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem on May 14, just two days after the May 12 deadline to renew the Iran sanctions. “We know there are many challenges ahead and we look forward to being your partner in resolving each of them,” Pompeo said. “The United States and Israel I know together can achieve that.”
