Billionaire businessman Sheldon Adelson is pouring $30 million into the pockets of House Republicans ahead of the November midterm elections in the hope of helping the GOP maintain its majority.
Outgoing House Speaker Paul Ryan flew to Las Vegas last week and met with the casino mogul at his Venetian Hotel to talk about his large donation to the Congressional Leadership Fund.
The donation is three times greater than the $10 million Adelson contributed to the conservative House fund in the 2016 election and will be made public in Federal Election Commission filings released in the next month.
Two senior Republicans told Politico that Ryan and Adelson were joined by his Adelson’s wife, Miriam; Republican Jewish Coalition Chairman Norm Coleman, super PAC Executive Director Corry Bliss, and Ryan’s aide, Jake Kastan.
Ryan made a case to Adelson about how the GOP plans to hold the House. Then, because Ryan is not permitted to ask for a million-dollar donation due to his political position, he left the room and Coleman sealed the deal.
