The price of gasoline in California hit $4.682 per gallon on Monday, the second day in a row of record prices at the pump.
The state’s average price for a gallon of regular gas went up from $4.671 on Sunday, which itself broke an all-time record set in 2012, according to AAA.
Counties with the highest prices, which exceeded $5.50 per gallon in some places, are concentrated largely in the western and northwestern regions of the state.

States around the country have seen significant rates of change in their prices in recent weeks. As of Thursday, Michigan and Arizona had experienced the largest average increase in prices over the week before, with increases of 11 cents and 8 cents, respectively.
Meanwhile, the nation’s average gas price stands at $3.415.

President Joe Biden has been pressured by his fellow Democrats to intervene in the market by opening the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, something he resisted doing last month, saying it wouldn’t do much to affect prices.
Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm signaled last Monday that some action by the administration on prices was imminent, but the White House closed the week without any major announcements.
