Democratic debate viewers hail atheist Ron Reagan ‘burning in hell’ commercial

Ron Reagan’s advertisement for the Freedom From Religion Foundation was the clear winner of the CNN/Des Moines Register Democratic presidential primary debate, according to several Twitter users.

Tuesday night’s event was criticized for being “low energy,” but one commercial that reappeared several times kept viewers entertained. The Freedom From Religion Foundation ran an advertisement featuring Reagan, who is the son of President Ronald Reagan, proudly declaring that he’s not afraid of “burning in hell.”

“Hi, I’m Ron Reagan, an unabashed atheist, and I’m alarmed by the intrusions of religion into our secular government,” Reagan says in the opening of the advertisement. “That’s why I’m asking you to support the Freedom From Religion Foundation, the nation’s largest and most effective association of atheists and agnostics working to keep state and church separate, just like our Founding Fathers intended. Please support the Freedom From Religion Foundation.”

He concludes the advertisement by saying, “Ron Reagan. Lifelong atheist. Not afraid of burning in hell.”

The advertisement, which has aired on cable news stations since 2014, stole the show during the debate. Several Twitter users hopped online to signal their support or to discuss the humor in hearing someone say they are “not afraid of burning in hell” during a debate break.
