Angela Rye to join ESPN with goal of bringing perspective on social justice, race, and culture

ESPN announced that it signed Angela Rye to contribute features and commentaries surrounding topics of social justice, race, and culture this week.

In her work for ESPN, the podcast host and lawyer will feature topics such as the role athletes play in social justice movements, the 50th anniversary of Title IX, and Jackie Robinson’s impact 75 years after he broke the color barrier.

“Her strong connection and commitment to the black community will serve this series of vitally important stories on African American athletes making history and a positive difference,” said David Roberts, ESPN’s senior vice president of NBA and studio production.

Rye was recently named to YouTube’s Black Voices project and served as the executive director and counsel to the Congressional Black Caucus for the 112th Congress.

ESPN’s hiring of Rye comes amid discussion of racism in the NFL as former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores sued the league over alleged racist hiring practices Tuesday.

In a statement released by his lawyers, Flores said the need for change is “bigger than my personal goals.”
