‘Squad’ member Ayanna Pressley getting tested for coronavirus after exhibiting flu-like symptoms

A prominent left-wing congresswoman is isolating after contracting flu-like symptoms that could be the coronavirus.

The press office of Democratic Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley released a statement confirming her condition on Wednesday.

“After experiencing flu-like symptoms, Congresswoman Pressley sought professional medical treatment out of an abundance of caution. She has been tested for COVID-19 and is awaiting test results,” Pressley spokeswoman Lina Francis said.

If Pressley tests positive, she would be the fourth member of Congress to contract the disease this month. Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Reps. Ben McAdams, a Democrat from Utah, and Mario Diaz-Balart, a Republican from Florida, have each tested positive for the disease, and Pressley’s fellow Massachusetts Democrat, Rep. Seth Moulton announced he was self-quarantining after feeling unwell on Wednesday.

Pressley, who is a member of the liberal freshman House group “the Squad,” called for some federal prison sentences to be commuted on earlier this month in an effort to slow the spread of the disease.

Almost 500,000 people have been infected by the disease worldwide, with close to 200,000 recovering from the sickness, according to a virus tracker created by Johns Hopkins University.
