Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn, one of the top Democrats in the House, said that President Trump’s obstruction of Robert Mueller’s investigation was too obvious for them not to include should the House write up articles of impeachment.
Clyburn, who’s from South Carolina’s 6th Congressional District, said the accusations of obstruction of justice are “too clear not to include” in any set of articles of impeachment, according to the State.
Mueller, who spent two years investigating whether Trump or any member of his campaign knowingly conspired with foreign entities to win the 2016 presidential elections, laid out ten instances where the president may have committed obstruction of justice. He opted not to make a ruling on the matter, however, following a longstanding Department of Justice guideline saying a sitting president cannot be indicted.
Clyburn’s statement provides insight into one question facing Democrats, which is about the scope of any articles of impeachments they produce. Many have called for the president’s impeachment based on his actions as they were laid out by Mueller, however, one House Judiciary Committee member told McClatchy that it has been made “pretty clear” that Mueller’s findings will not be included.
“Oh lord, yes, things have changed a whole lot since these testimonies,” Clyburn added, referring to the House Intelligence Committee’s depositions and hearings regarding Trump’s dealings with Ukraine that have taken place over the last month.
The House Judiciary Committee will continue the investigation on Wednesday as four legal scholars will testify in public hearings. It comes after the House Intelligence Committee held weeks of depositions with government officials that had knowledge of Trump’s actions in Ukraine in regards to pushing for an investigation of his 2020 rival, former Vice President Joe Biden.
