Sights, sounds, and tweets from the Washington Capitals’ Stanley Cup parade

A large crowd chanted “We got the cup!” as the parade to celebrate the recent Stanley Cup victory of the Washington Capitals began Tuesday morning in Washington, D.C.

The parade began at 11 a.m. at Constitution Avenue and 23rd Street NW near the Lincoln Memorial. The route stretches along Constitution Avenue to Seventh Street NW, where it ends in a rally on the National Mall.

A preparation got underway, a video of Zambonis, which are used to resurface ice, were shown driving along K Street.

SB Nation tweeted a video of Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin, who has appeared all over town in recent days with the Stanley Cup in tow, breaking out into dance shortly before the parade.

Even former President Barack Obama got in on the festivities, tweeting out his congratulations to the Capitals.

As the parade got underway, photos showed the massive crowds gathered for the festivities.

Parade organizers expected there would be more than 100,000 people in attendance.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority trolled President Trump by evoking the size of his inauguration crowd in response to inquiries into the number of people using the system to attend the celebrations on the National Mall and downtown.

The Washington Capitals Twitter account shared a video of four F-16s from the D.C. Air National Guard flying over the parade with Ovechkin watching while holding the Stanley Cup.

Federal employees were given administrative leave to attend the Capitals’ parade for part of the day. But not everyone got time off. One college student showed up to the parade with a sign that said, “I GOT FIRED TO BE HERE LETS GO CAPS!”

The last time a D.C. sports team won a championship that was celebrated with a parade was in 1992, when the Redskins won the Super Bowl. One parade attendee noted that 26 years ago was when Michael Jackson’s “Black or White” was a top hit.
