House Speaker Paul Ryan has formally invited French President Emmanuel Macron to address a joint body of Congress during his April visit to the United States.
“France is not only our oldest ally, but one of our strongest,” Ryan said in a statement issued Wednesday morning. “This is a special opportunity to build on the historic relationship between our countries, and to reaffirm our commitment to defeating terror both domestically and around the world.”
President Trump invited Macron in late February for a state visit after he and first lady Melania Trump visited the French leader and his wife in Europe last July.
If he accepts the invitation to speak at the U.S. Capitol on April 25, Macron will be the eighth French president to address the House and Senate since 1824.
