President Trump’s political standing is unlikely to falter despite the majority of the population believing accusations of his extramarital affairs, according to a new Politico/Morning Consult poll.
Following the airing of former porn star Stormy Daniels, aka Stephanie Clifford’s, “60 Minutes” interview over the weekend, where she detailed her alleged relationship with Trump, the president’s approval rating was mostly unaffected.
“The Stormy Daniels scandal has had little discernible impact on voter opinions of President Trump this month,” Morning Consult Co-Founder and Chief Research Officer Kyle Dropp said. “In this week’s poll, 46 percent of voters said the Stormy Daniels matter made no difference in their view of President Trump, compared to 39 percent who said the same in early March.”
Last week, Trump’s approval rating was at 44 percent. After the interview aired Sunday, his approval rating dropped only two percentage points to 42 percent, which likely had little to do with the interview.
On some stages, Trump has gained ground in political standings. For one, fewer people want Trump impeached than last year, and voters are split on whether the president should even address Daniels’ assertions of an alleged extramarital affair.
According to the poll’s findings, most people are already aware of Trump’s behavior regarding women and shortcomings in maintaining a faithful relationship, but are willing to overlook those factors.
Although 80 percent of those polled say engaging in an extramarital affair is morally wrong, almost half of that same sample size say the allegations against Trump doesn’t change their view of him.
