John Bolton, who President Trump has appointed as the replacement national security adviser, endorsed Republican candidate John James for a Michigan Senate seat last Thursday, according to a report published Tuesday.
“I’m honored to have the support of Ambassador John Bolton,” James said in a statement. “I understand national security from a strategic to a tactical level. I understand how to keep Americans safe because I’ve done it before and will continue to do so as Michigan’s next U.S. Senator.”
The endorsement by Bolton, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, is believed to have taken place prior to President Trump’s appointment of him, the Daily Caller reported. Bolton’s service is set to take effect April 9.
James is an Iraq War veteran and businessman in Detroit. He is running against Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich.
Michigan, a battleground state, went to Trump in the 2016 presidential election by less than half a percentage point.
