Kyrsten Sinema wears purple wig on Senate floor to represent closure of salons amid coronavirus

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema donned an unusual fashion accessory on the Senate floor earlier this week.

The Arizona Democrat styled a $12.99 purple bob wig in the chamber on Monday in solidarity with those staying home without access to hairdressers and salons, and to encourage people to keep social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Senate resumed on Monday with new social distancing and safety guidelines encouraging lawmakers and staff to wear masks and stay 6 feet away from other individuals.

“Kyrsten plans to continue social distancing in accordance with best practices, including from salons, so today she opted for a $12.99 purple wig,” Sinema spokesperson Hannah Hurley said in a statement to the Arizona Republic.

Her office also told a local reporter that the senator was setting an “example of social distancing from hair salons” with the wig.

Sinema has been critical of Arizona Republican Gov. Doug Ducey’s plan to start reopening the state.

Barbershops and salons are expected to open up later this week in the state with social distancing restrictions in mind. Next week, restaurants and coffee shops may start opening for dine-in services. Arizona is nearing 10,000 coronavirus cases and has suffered 426 deaths.
