Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee began Thursday with the traditional Trooping the Color, an annual military parade held in honor of the monarch’s birthday.
Thursday’s Jubilee marked the first time in her 70-year reign that Elizabeth did not participate in the parade directly due to episodic mobility troubles, instead passing the responsibilities on to her eldest son, Charles, the crown prince. The queen remained at Buckingham Palace and will receive a different salute from the cavalry on the balcony following the parade.

Prince William and Anne, the princess royal, accompanied Charles on horseback and will join the queen on the balcony with other members of the royal family to witness the Royal Air Force flyby and greet the public. The Trooping the Color tradition dates back to King George II in 1748.
