President Trump maintained Democratic attempts to impeach him are an assault on the “God-given rights” of American citizens.
“As I learn more and more each day, I am coming to the conclusion that what is taking place is not an impeachment, it is a COUP, intended to take away the Power of the People, their VOTE, their Freedoms, their Second Amendment, Religion, Military, Border Wall, and their God-given rights as a Citizen of The United States of America!” the president proclaimed Tuesday on Twitter.

His tweets come amid the political furor of the impeachment inquiry House Democrats have opened, stemming from a July 25 phone call Trump made with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Some allege his request that Ukraine investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, a political rival in the 2020 election, and his son Hunter for potential corruption is an impeachable offense.
Trump and Republican leadership have used similar language to denounce the alleged machinations by some members of the Justice Department during the Mueller investigation.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday that House Democrats are attempting to pull off “a legislative coup d’etat,” saying, “They tried for two years to get rid of Donald Trump using the Russian deal, and when that collapsed on them, and they looked like they were stupid when Mueller reported, they had to find a new gimmick. This is the new gimmick.”
