Three Democratic senators want to pay most families thousands of dollars each month to help ease the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.
Sens. Kamala Harris of California, Bernie Sanders of Vermont, and Ed Markey of Massachusetts are releasing the Monthly Economic Crisis Support Act on Friday, which goes dramatically further than the one-time $1,200 stimulus payments sent last month.
Under their proposal, $2,000 each month would be sent to people who make less than $120,000 per year. Married couples filing taxes jointly would receive $4,000 each month. The legislation would also provide $2,000 for each child, up to three children.
The checks would be retroactive to March and extend three months after the Health and Humans Services Department declares the health emergency over. Debt collectors would be prohibited from siphoning the payments, which would be sent out to people even if they do not have a Social Security number or did not file taxes in 2019.
