Protesters took to the streets in Kenosha, Wisconsin, following the shooting of Jacob Blake.
People in the area lit cars and buildings on fire Monday night a day after Blake, a black man, was shot multiple times by law enforcement officials and remains in critical condition. First responders were tasked with putting out multiple fires that were set throughout the city, while also responding to reports of vandalism and looting, according to the Kenosha News.
Several businesses were also set on fire as the demonstrators protested long after Gov. Tony Evers’s 8 p.m. curfew went into effect, according to CNN. More than 100 members of the National Guard were deployed to Kenosha to assist local authorities.
A day earlier, police said they responded to a call about a potential domestic disturbance, which is what led the police to Blake. Video posted to social media showed a black man, believed to be Blake, walking from the passenger side of the car around the hood with officers following him as their guns were drawn.
The man opened the driver door and starts to move inside the car, after which the officers start firing their guns. Seven shots can be heard in the video, but it’s unclear how many officers fired at Blake. It is unclear if there was a weapon in the vehicle. The video does not show what happened before the man walked away from the officers.
Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident, and the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
