A crocodile has trapped himself inside a rubber tire and other debris left along a river’s edge by a massive earthquake and tsunami that hit Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018.

An Indonesian crocodile has finally been freed from the tire stuck around its neck after six years.

A local man from the island of Sulawesi named Tili, 35, told Reuters that he was able to capture the over 13-foot crocodile, with some rope tied to a log and live chickens and ducks used as bait, to free the reptile of a motorcycle tire that it had been swimming around with for years.

“I caught the crocodile by myself. I was asking for help from people here, but they were scared,” Tili commented.

Tili, a bird catcher who like many Indonesians use only one name, holds up a tire after removing him from around the neck of a crocodile, in Palu, Central Sulawesi, on Feb. 7, 2022. The wild crocodile with the used motorcycle tire stuck around its neck for six years has finally been freed by the man and his friends in a tireless effort that wildlife conservation officials hailed as a milestone.

Tili said he used a saw to free the reptile, which was nicknamed by locals “buaya kalung ban” or “crocodile with a tire necklace,” after tracking it for three weeks. Previous attempts, including by an Australian crocodile wrangler, to free the crocodile had been unsuccessful.
