Delaware Sen. Chris Coons wasn’t pleased to see Washington Nationals fans chant “lock him up” at the president during Sunday night’s World Series game.
President Trump attended Game 5 of the World Series alongside several top Republicans and the first lady. When the stadium showed the group in their box seats, the president was met with boos and chants of “lock him up.”
During an interview on New Day, the Democrat criticized the fans who chanted “lock him up” and called on Americans to respect the office of the president.
“Forgive me, I’m enough of a sort of traditionalist about our institutions that even at a time when there is a lot that our president does that I find disturbing, offensive, unconventional, I have a hard time with the idea of a crowd on a globally televised sporting event chanting ‘lock him up’ about our president,” said Coons.
He added, “I, frankly, think the office of the president deserves respect even when the actions of our president at times don’t.”
Coons called it “despicable” that Trump allowed “lock her up” chants about Hillary Clinton in his campaign rallies, and noted that he hopes the chant heard at the Nationals game doesn’t become a staple of Democratic events in the future.
He also warned Democrats against politicizing the impeachment inquiry because of the “furor” it could cause.
“I understand why crowds in Washington would feel a lot of animus toward our president given a lot of things that he’s done,” said Coons. “But I, frankly, that’s why I think those of us in the Senate need to approach the impeachment process seriously, in a measured and responsible way, because our very institutions — our Constitution is at risk by these sorts of the passions that have been unleashed by the politics of the moment.”
