Trump cites ‘good chance’ Kim Jong Un ‘will do what is right for his people’

President Trump said Wednesday morning he is looking forward to meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to discuss the possibility of a denuclearized Korean Peninsula.

“For years and through many administrations, everyone said that peace and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula was not even a small possibility,” Trump tweeted. “Now there is a good chance that Kim Jong Un will do what is right for his people and for humanity. Look forward to our meeting!”

In a separate tweet, Trump also said he spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping about his meeting with Kim. Following several reports and speculations, China confirmed, after the train carrying Kim and his delegation crossed back into North Korea, that the impromptu visit to Beijing did take place. The White House later confirmed the news as well.

According to Trump’s tweet, Jinping said the meeting went well and the leader of North Korea was looking forward to meeting with Trump.

However, Trump said until the meeting takes place and any real changes are made, the U.S. will continue to apply sanctions and pressure on North Korea “at all cost.”

“Received message last night from XI JINPING of China that his meeting with KIM JONG UN went very well and that KIM looks forward to his meeting with me,” Trump posted to Twitter Wednesday morning. “In the meantime, and unfortunately, maximum sanctions and pressure must be maintained at all cost!”

This month, Trump accepted an invitation to meet with the leader of North Korea to discuss denuclearization.
