Trip to meet Trump grand prize in RNC contest as GOP leans on ex-president to raise funds

The Republican National Committee is promising a trip to Florida and a meeting with former President Donald Trump to one grassroots donor picked at random, its latest effort to raise money off of the former president’s popularity with grassroots conservatives.

The RNC is offering to cover hotel accommodations and airfare to Palm Beach for the winner of the “GOP Giveaway.” This individual will be granted time and a picture with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, the former president’s private club and residence, coinciding with the RNC spring retreat for wealthy campaign contributors. Trump is set to address the April retreat during a private dinner at Mar-a-Lago, a hangout popular with Republican insiders allied with the 45th president.

“Please contribute any amount today to be automatically entered to win,” reads the RNC’s email fundraising appeal promoting the contest to fly to Florida and meet Trump. “We do not want you to miss out on this incredible trip.”

Trump lost reelection to President Biden, and some Republicans blame him for the party’s failures in two January runoff elections in Georgia that handed control of the Senate to the Democrats. But the former president still has juice with grassroots donors who contribute in small amounts online and are collectively responsible for tens of millions of dollars in annual giving, prompting the RNC to lean on the former president to keep its coffers full.

Since Feb. 1 of this year, Trump has been the subject of most RNC fundraising appeals, with dozens of emails issued urging support for the 45th president in some fashion or another.

“As a Trump Legacy Member, you will be a key player in our effort to DEFEND President Trump’s America First policies from Biden and the radical left,” read one. Read another: “We know that you appreciate all the hard work he did, which is why we wanted to invite you to sign the surprise ‘Thank You’ Card that we’re putting together for him. You can even leave a personal note.”

Trump recently urged grassroots Republicans to donate to his new political action committee, Save America. He also has issued cease and desist letters to the RNC and other Republican campaign committees, demanding they receive his permission before using his likeness in political appeals. That demand is not likely to be honored — at least not voluntarily.

“I fully support the Republican Party and important GOP Committees, but I do not support RINOs and fools, and it is not their right to use my likeness or image to raise funds,” Trump said in a statement through his PAC last week. “So much money is being raised and completely wasted by people that do not have the GOP’s best interests in mind.”

Trump has not ruled mounting a third White House bid in 2024.
