Goodyear accused of discrimination following employee diversity program that says supporting Blue Lives Matter is ‘unacceptable’

Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company is accused of discriminating against certain employees following an image of a diversity training program that says supporting Blue Lives Matter is “unacceptable.”

A photo of a slide for a Goodyear employee diversity training program has circulated on social media in recent days. The photo shows one bracket deeming what is “acceptable,” including showing support for “Black Lives Matter (BLM), Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride (LGBT).”

“Blue Lives Matter, All Lives Matter, MAGA Attire, Political Affiliated Slogans or Material” are listed under the “unacceptable” list.

An anonymous employee leaked the slide and said it was presented at a Topeka, Kansas, plant by an area manager, according to local outlet WIBW. The training program came from the corporate office in Akron, Ohio, according to the employee.

“If someone wants to wear a BLM shirt in here, then cool. I’m not going to get offended about it. But at the same time, if someone’s not going to be able to wear something that is politically based, even in the farthest stretch of the imagination, that’s discriminatory,” the anonymous employee told the outlet. “If we’re talking about equality, then it needs to be equality. If not, it’s discrimination.”

A Goodyear spokeswoman responded to the image but has not said whether it was part of the corporate office’s training program.

“Goodyear is committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful workplace where all of our associates can do their best in a spirit of teamwork. As part of this commitment, we do allow our associates to express their support on racial injustice and other equity issues but ask that they refrain from workplace expressions, verbal or otherwise, in support of political campaigning for any candidate or political party as well as other similar forms of advocacy that fall outside the scope of equity issues,” Goodyear’s Melissa Monaco said.

The image has prompted some Twitter users to denounce it as discriminatory and unacceptable.

“Goodyear, the tire company that produced what has been called ‘the deadliest tire ever made’ just released it’s Diversity Training manifesto which supports BLM and LGBT but NOT Blue Lives Matter or MAGA! In other words ‘we’re racist, but in a good way,’” former Lehigh County Commissioner Dean Browning wrote.

Others echoed his message, including Georgia Rep. Doug Collins.

“Hey @goodyear — the people that nearly beat a man to death in Portland the other night weren’t wearing blue lives matter shirts or MAGA hats. The Left is ruining this country,” Collins tweeted.
