Florida governor compares reopening schools during pandemic to raid that killed Osama bin Laden

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis compared the mission to kill Osama bin Laden to his mission to reopen schools during the coronavirus pandemic.

During a press conference on Wednesday, the Republican said he first thought of the comparison after a local superintendent said reopening her district was “akin to a Navy SEAL operation.”

“Just as the SEAL surmounted obstacles to bring Osama bin Laden to justice, so too would the Martin County School system find a way to provide parents with a meaningful choice of in-person instruction or continued distance learning,” DeSantis said. “All in, all the time.”

The search for bin Laden, who was the leader of al Qaeda and the mastermind behind the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, spanned nearly 10 years and culminated in a raid of his compound in May 2011. SEAL Team 6 executed the raid on the compound where they successfully killed bin Laden, removed his remains, and tossed him into the sea.

Schools in Florida have been struggling to find the best way to educate children during the coronavirus pandemic. Some schools have reopened with some social distancing protocols, while others have opted to stick to online instruction.
