Five Marines killed in aircraft crash in California

Five Marines were killed during an aircraft crash on Wednesday, the service branch confirmed a day later.

The aircraft, an MV-22B Osprey, belonging to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, went down during a training mission near Glamis, California.

Maj. Gen. Bradford J. Gering, commanding general of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, issued the following statement, “We mourn the loss of our Marines in this tragic mishap. Our hearts go out to their families and friends as they cope with this tragedy.”

The Marine Corps did not provide the names of the service members who lost their lives, citing next of kin notifications.

An investigation is underway.

“Five Marines were onboard the aircraft, and we are awaiting confirmation on the status of all members of the crew,” the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing said in a statement to the Washington Examiner on Wednesday. “Contrary to initial social media reports, there was no nuclear material on board the aircraft.”
