‘Profoundly grateful for this good news’: Alabama governor ‘cured’ of lung cancer

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey had good news to report about her cancer diagnosis.

The Republican governor, 75, has been “cured” of lung cancer, according to her doctor.

“She will continue on routine surveillance imaging, but I consider Governor Ivey to be cured,” Dr. Alex Whitley of Central Alabama Radiation Oncology said in a statement Wednesday.

A spot on Ivey’s lungs was discovered last year during a routine exam. Ivey said in September that her doctors assured her the treatment would be successful, and she said she would continue her gubernatorial duties during radiation.

“Yesterday, my doctors performed a follow-up examination on the site where I received three radiation treatments last September to treat the small, isolated malignancy that was discovered on my lung,” the governor said in a statement Wednesday. “I am profoundly grateful for this good news.”

“Naturally, I want to thank the Good Lord for His abundant grace in my healing. This is one more of the many blessings He has bestowed on my life,” she continued. “Most of all, I want to thank the good people of our great state for your many prayers and continued support.”

Ivey went on to call serving as governor of the state her “life’s highest honor.”
