Sessions on banning all Muslims: ‘No’

Sen. Jeff Session, R-Ala., said Tuesday that he would not support a ban on all Muslims entering the United States as President-elect Trump’s attorney general.

“Would you support a law that says you can’t come to America because you’re a Muslim?” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., asked Sessions at his confirmation hearing at the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“No,” Sessions said.

The question is seen as critical by many because Trump during the campaign proposed a ban on all Muslims until the U.S. gets a better handle on people who may be trying to do harm to the country. Trump later backed down.

But Sessions did indicate support for laws keeping people out of the U.S. who seek to do harm to others.

“Would you support a law that says that if you’re a Muslim, you say you’re a Muslim, and when we ask you what does that mean to you, well that means I gotta kill everybody that’s different from me, it’s OK to say they can’t come?” Graham asked.

“I think that would be a prudent decision,” Sessions replied.

“I hope we can keep people out of the country who want to kill everybody because of their religion,” Graham said. “I hope we’re smart enough to know that’s not what most people in the Muslim faith believe.”
