The Maryland state Senate delayed debate on a bill legalizing same-sex marriage until Thursday at the request of Republican leaders.
The bill was approved Tuesday by the Senate’s Judiciary Proceedings Committee, following the House’s passage of the bill on Friday. If passed without amendments in the Senate, the bill would go to Gov. Martin O’Malley — who proposed it — for his signature.
If it passes, opponents have promised to petition the bill to get it on the November ballot. Thanks to an amendment added by the House, the bill is not scheduled to take effect until January 2013.
