‘My gap year from school is over’: Greta Thunberg returns to class after year of climate activism

Greta Thunberg is headed back to school.

The Swedish teenager announced that the gap year she had taken to raise awareness about climate change had ended. Thunberg, 17, caught national attention in 2018 after she started a school strike in Sweden, where she would skip class on Fridays to protest inaction on climate change outside of the Swedish Parliament.

“My gap year from school is over, and it feels so great to finally be back in school again!” Thunberg wrote in a post to Instagram.

Thunberg was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize and was named Time magazine’s “Person of the Year” in 2019 for her work to raise awareness about climate change. She hosted several massive rallies as part of her advocacy, but most of her Friday protests have been put on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Sweden was one of only a few countries on the planet that opted not to close schools during the coronavirus pandemic.
