The Senate Commerce Committee held a hearing Thursday morning to dig into the Takata airbag defects and the recent string of auto recalls.
Honda is under investigation for failure to provide early warning to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about the deaths related to Takata airbags.
“What we’ve seen so far is delay, denial, even deception and nondisclosure,” Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said at a press conference preceding the hearing.
Takata is also under investigation by NHTSA for allegedly knowing for a long time before it notified consumers about the possibly deadly airbags.
“The owners should have a right to expect that the cars that they drive are as safe as possible,” Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., said at the hearing.
Ten automakers have recalled 7.8 million vehicles related to the Takata airbags.
