The New School in New York, the renowned Greenwich Village university founded in 1919, has created a $300,000 scholarship fund specifically for Baltimore-area graduate students.

Fred P. Hochberg, dean of Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy, a division of The New School, said the scholarship money was set aside in recognition of Mayor Martin O?Malley?s participation in a recent conference titled “Urban Conversations: Cities at Risk.”

O?Malley appeared with Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco and other elected officials from across the country, as well as former FEMA directors Michael Brown and James Lee Witt, to discuss government and private-sector responses to urban disasters. The event, studying homeland security and disaster response, was hosted by New School President Bob Kerrey, a former Nebraska governor and U.S. senator.

“Mayor O?Malley is in the forefront of homeland security issues and urban preparedness,” Hochberg said. “That?s why we invited him here. We created the scholarships to honor the speakers and cities who took part this year.”

Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy is designed to connect management skills with public service and policy. The school offers master?s degree programs in health services management and policy, human resources management, nonprofit management, organization change management, and urban policy analysis and management. The school also offers a doctoral program in public and urban policy.

“Our students ? need the management and analytical skills necessary for problem-solving,” Hochberg said.

“Milano?s generous scholarships will enable students to work on real issues that will make a difference in Baltimore?s future,” O?Malley said in a statement.
