Democrats ramp up investigation into Jared Kushner’s business dealings

Democrats in the House and the Senate are accelerating their investigation into Jared Kushner‘s business dealings with consideration to his role in the Trump administration.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) jointly announced they are seeking documents from the Pentagon and the State Department regarding Kushner’s “role in foreign policy” while he served as senior adviser to then-President Donald Trump.

TRUMP SAYS CLAIMS THAT HE WANTED TO FIRE IVANKA AND JARED WERE A LIE

“Mr. Kushner’s foreign financial entanglements and his conduct as Senior White House Adviser suggest that he may have prioritized his own financial interests over the national interest. The pursuit of personal financial gain should not dictate U.S. tax, trade, and national security policies. The ongoing investigations by the Finance Committee and Oversight Committee into these matters will inform potential legislative efforts to prevent future abuses by senior U.S. officials,” the two wrote in a letter to the State and Defense departments.

The two Democrats are focused on a $1.1 billion payment to Kushner Companies from Brookfield Asset Management for a 99-year lease on 666 Fifth Avenue in New York City using “funding from a subsidiary backed by the Government of Qatar,” per the lawmakers. The Qatari-linked investment provided the bailout for the struggling property needed at the time.

Kushner stepped back from his business roles when he served in the White House, but his father, Charles Kushner, remained involved in several businesses. The lawmakers are searching for a link between the transaction and its influence on Jared Kushner, as his advisory role included policy in the Middle East.

The call for documents for this investigation comes only weeks before Maloney is set to lose her House seat and Democrats are set to lose control of the House.

The investigation is also one of several aimed at the Trump administration as Trump starts his bid for the 2024 election. It is unclear if Jared Kushner is playing a role in Trump’s 2024 campaign, but Jared Kushner’s wife, Ivanka Trump, has said she would not be involved after she also served as a senior adviser to Trump during his presidency.
