GOP senator cites Trump’s love of family as possible explanation for hush money payments

Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., suggested Wednesday that President Trump may have directed hush money payments to women because he loves his family.

During an interview on CNN, Rounds was asked to comment on Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen producing checks to the House Oversight Committee that he said were reimbursements from Trump for hush money payments to women who claimed to have had affairs with Trump.

“I honestly think this president loves his family, and I think it has as much to do with trying not to have public discussions about something that is, for him, a private matter that he didn’t want to have discussed with his family,” Rounds said.

“Every time I think about this I think about that that particular issues because I think he really does care about his family, he loves his family, and I don’t think he wanted his family to go through this,” he added.

CNN anchor John Berman then said Trump faces allegations that the payments were made to try and influence the election.

“Right now we talk about what are legitimate campaign expense, I’m not going to try and litigate that today,” Rounds said in response.
